GKA KITE-SURF WORLD TOUR STOP ADDED AT PRESTIGIOUS KITESURF WORLD CUP GERMANY EVENT

Monday 17th July, 2017
Hamburg, Germany

After the Germany leg of the WKL World Cup 2017 was cancelled by the German Event-Organizer and the WKL because of irreconcilable disputes between the two parties, the GKA decided at its last AGM in Tarifa (29./30.6.) to rescue the most important kite event in the world by running a GKA Kite-Surf World Tour stop in Fehmarn (Germany) in its place.

GKA KITE-SURF WORLD TOUR TARIFA FINALS

Yesterday’s faltering winds brought about the abandonment of the final, but the Levante winds built overnight and, as the crowds began to gather on Valdevaqueros beach on Sunday morning, a powerful wind was already blowing from the left with a forecast of up to 40 knots. Airton and Matchu were released onto the water at 11.45am to warm-up and their eagerness to get down to business was clear as they tacked back and forth gesturing to the race officials that they were ready to go.

GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Tarifa Day Three

Airton and Matchu surge towards a Cape Verdean Showdown in the finals - Day Three Tarifa Strapless Pro

Report: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide

The riders were briefed just after 1pm today by Race Director Juan Antonio Aragon and head judge Dani Jimenez and today's aim would be to complete the quarter and semi finals with an option to progress onto the finals as well. There were slightly lighter winds forecasted than yesterday but, as the riders left to prep their gear, the windline could already be seen advancing towards the shore and the first heats began at 1.30pm.

Matchups Lopes will meet his close friend and fellow Cape Verdean rider Airton Cozzolino in tomorrow's final while Paulino Perreira and Jan Marcos Riveras face off for third place

GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Tarifa Day Two

POWERFUL PONIENTE PRIMES VALDEVAQUEROS FOR THE FINALS - DAY TWO TARIFA STRAPLESS PRO

28th June 2017: Valdevaqueros, Tarifa, Spain

Report: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide

Race director Juan Antonio Aragon laid out the schedule for the second day of competition here at the Tarifa Strapless Pro just after noon. The stronger Poniente winds were blowing more onshore and it was clear nobody would be struggling for power in today's heats!

As the wind continued to increase in strength, pushing up towards 30 knots, round two would consist of eight two-rider heats in which the competitors would be battle to stay in the competition.

The Tarifa contingent rode well, cheering each other on in between heats alongside the Tarifenian crowds who rooted for their local heroes. Cape Verdean Luis Brito upset the party when he seized the advantage over David Marin, but his big crowd pleasing tricks close-in to the beach soon had them won over, such as crazy horse back loop kiteloops, one footers and sizeable kiteloops. Marin was landing tricks on both tacks but couldn't match Luis for height or power.

GKA Kite-Surf World Tour Tarifa Day One Kicks Off!

TARIFA STRAPLESS PRO AND THE 2017 KITE-SURF WORLD TOUR BEGINS – DAY ONE

28th June 2017: Valdevaqueros, Tarifa, Spain

Report: Matt Pearce / Photos: Ydwer van der Heide

The excitement around the build up for the Tarifa Strapless Pro, the first event of this year's GKA Kite-Surf World Tour, has been palpable since the end of the 2016 season in Dakhla, where although Keahi de Aboitiz claimed the event win, Matchu Lopes finally lifted the overall trophy.

Today we witnessed the start of what's sure to be a hotly contested tour after the agreement was reached with World Sailing earlier this year to allow the GKA to crown an official 'wave' World Champion.

28 riders from around the world converged on Valdevaqueros beach in Tarifa on Wednesday morning to register for the event and, at 1.30pm, GKA Secretary General Jörgen Vögt, race director Juan Antonio Aragon and head judge Dani Jimenez addressed the riders, explaining the event format as well as outlining the plans for the tour ahead. The GKA organising team have worked tirelessly on the lead up to this first event and now, with four stops confirmed, the riders cheered at the prospect of a fuller schedule of events to focus on across the coming months.
